Stephen graduated from the University of Queensland as a Medical Practitioner. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He completed a Clinical and Research Fellowship at Harvard University USA in Knee Arthroplasty and further studies in Knee Arthroscopy and Ligament Reconstruction at Cambridge, England.

He then returned to Australia and founded the Knee Centre, specialising in Knee surgery.
